Escape the Resort Industrial Complex
If you came across this searching for all-inclusive resorts, then you might need a change in your life, in which case you’ve come to the right place.
All-inclusive resorts are trash. They’re optimized for profit at the expense of quality. They’re for people who don’t want to learn about the country they’re visiting, try anything new, or do anything out of their daily routine-enabled comfort zone – and you’re not like that. Look, all-inclusives happen. They’ve happened to me, I had fun, and they’ll probably happen again in my lifetime, but I do not seek them out, and neither should you.
If it’s luxury, security, amenities, and upscale hospitality you’re looking for, then Cartagena has that for you, without the
imprisonment of the all-inclusive. Cartagena is a city full of amazing foodie experiences and you need to eat at as many of these beautiful restaurants as you can – don’t confine yourself to one restaurant. In this article, I’ll show you 9 luxe Cartagena hotels that bring local flavor, sleek design, and personalized service that’ll beat a cookie-cutter resort any day.
So what is the perfect spot for your next Caribbean escape?
Google “Cartagena” and pictures of San Augustine will pop up because this is probably the best hotel in Cartagena.
Set in Cartagena’s walled city, Casa San Agustin marries colonial architecture with modern touches. You’ll find just 17 rooms across three restored townhouses, so it feels intimate, not crowded. It’s built into a 300-year-old aqueduct, and around some of the structures. You can see this in the pool (pictured).
The decor is colonial-era with a side of contemporary Caribbean. The vibe here is upscale, romantic, and both culturally- and architecturally-rich. The rooms have multi-bedroom suites with high wood-beamed ceilings, stone walls, and handmade tilework. Some suites have their own private plunge pools or balconies.
Price: $550 – $1,600 / night
Showstopper: The pools – a stunning central courtyard pool that incorporates a preserved 300-year-old aqueduct wall, and a rooftop plunge pool with city views
Dining: Alma, the on-site restaurant, is one of Cartagena’s best-known for elegant takes on coastal Colombian cuisine. My second favorite restaurant after Candé, which is where we had our wedding.
Service: Personalized, top-tier service with bilingual staff.
Location: The walled city
Aminities: Complimentary breakfast, spa services, rooftop terraces, in-room minibar stocked with local rum and snacks, personalized concierge for custom tours and dinner reservations, and use of their private beach club Acasi on Barú Island (accessible by boat)

Built inside a converted 17th-century convent in Cartagena’s walled city, Sofitel Legend Santa Clara blends colonial grandeur with elegant French design.
This is a true landmark quiet luxury hotel, with towering archways and original frescoes. The pool is said to be the largest in the Old City, set inside a tranquil courtyard lined with palms.
Rooms and suites range from classic to lavish – reflected in the price – some even having butler service. It’s opulent without being over-the-top, and it’s one of the most iconic stays in Cartagena.
Price: $550 – $9,500 / night (I KNOW)
Showstopper: The pool – the largest in the Old Town – is framed by original convent arches and tropical landscaping
Dining: The Sofitel has the 3rd best restaurant in the city – 1621 is the formal fine dining restaurant with a 21-course French-Caribbean tasting menu – kind of a must-do restaurant when in Cartagena; El Claustro has a fancy buffet with à la carte options; and El Coro Lounge Bar is popular for cocktails and live music

The Ananda is built between two beautifully restored colonial townhouses just steps from Santo Domingo Square and the Clock Tower. Showstopper: A rooftop terrace with Jacuzzi and sun loungers, plus both indoor and outdoor saltwater pools surrounded by gardens and tranquil seating areas
Dining: Restaurante Vedana serves a modern mix of Caribbean and international dishes, but people their complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast is pretty incredible – it’s kind of a thing here.

I’ve stayed at Casa Lola more than any other hotel in Cartagena. It was the first place we stayed when I went back with my husband, kind of randomly, and then after that, every time we went I would demand that we stay there.
Casa Lola is this beautiful, royal-feeling boutique hotel, housed in restored 17th- and 19th-century colonial buildings. The decor mixes exposed brick, artisanal pieces, modern touches, and a water feature that runs through the entire hotel.
Each of the 12 rooms is uniquely decorated with curated art, the stairs are covered in plants, and the rooftop pools and garden lounge feel like Alice in Wonderland, Colombian edition. It’s located in the Getsemaní neighborhood, right next to the Plaza de la Trinidad.
Price: $320 – $820

This colorful boutique hideaway is actually literally the first hotel I ever stayed at when I was in Cartagena. We’re starting to get into exaggeration territory saying this is better than all-inclusive but if you’re ballin’ on a budget, this has less of a barrier to entry and feels exclusive. It’s a boutique hill‑house-style retreat that sits on Plaza Fernández de Madrid in Cartagena’s San Diego district. Housed in a renovated 1930s Republican-era mansion, Casa La Fe combines historical charm with a serene courtyard and rooftop plunge pool atmosphere.
Price: $220 – $370
Showstopper: Rooftop plunge pool and terrace with loungers and a poolside bar offering views over the Old City
Dining: No formal onsite restaurant; breakfast served a la carte in the courtyard. There is a bar/lounge for drinks and toast-style bites

Amenities: Outdoor pool, rooftop terrace, bar/lounge, room service

I got married here, and it was amazing.
I will forever love this hotel, which was priced way below what it’s worth at the time of our wedding in March 2023 – now it’s double. It’s a perfect restoration of a colonial townhouse in Cartagena’s Old Town, with on-point Colombian craftsmanship, seen in the architecture, textiles, and decor. It has a rooftop infinity pool with a poolside bar, a tiny steeple-roofed spa, and a refined restaurant serving Caribbean-inspired dishes.
Price: $300 – $600
Showstopper: Rooftop infinity pool and terrace with a poolside bar, set atop the historic building and offering views across the Walled City, masterful design
Dining: Restaurant Costa serves Caribbean-inspired seafood and international dishes; drinks available at rooftop bar
Service: 24-hour multilingual front desk and concierge and superb staff
Location: Located on Calle del Colegio in Cartagena’s historic center, next to Plaza de los Coches, Clock Tower, Gold Museum, and Inquisition Palace
Amenities: spa and wellness center, outdoor rooftop infinity pool, sauna, restaurant, bar/lounge, room service, minibars, airport shuttle
