Colombia's most exclusive gondola ecolodge
Your Complete Guide to El Nido Del Condor (2026)
Eje Cafetero didn’t look how I thought it was going to look.
I pictured rolling green hills, a cup of the world’s best coffee, maybe a photo in front of a colorful colonial building in Salento – and yes, you’ll get all of that.
But the version I experienced involved a lot of rain, a 1.5-hour dirt road into the mountains, a gondola swinging over a 2,000-meter valley, 2 wild condors that have lived on the same property for 25 years, a sushi restaurant in a mountain town that had absolutely no business being that good, and luxury hotels that manage to give you a pretty authentic experience at the same time.
This is the Colombian coffee region in style. 8 days, 4 extraordinary hotels, trout for practically every meal, and 1 horse that will absolutely try to throw you off the side of a mountain. (More on that later.)
This is the perfect 8-day Eje Cafetero itinerary that I tested and perfected. Prices are real. Everything in Colombian pesos with USD conversions because vague travel blogs are useless. And there’s a full price breakdown of everything we spent on the entire trip at the end of the article.
Let’s go.
Let’s talk about the thing that makes El Nido actually El Nido. You don’t drive up to this property. I mean you do, and it takes at least an hour and a half and can be dangerous if it’s raining. But you forget about that the second you see the gondola.
You arrive across a 2,000-meter-high valley from the hotel. You get into a cable car and glide across a massive gorge for about 10 minutes while the landscape unfolds beneath you, leaving you breathless and a little shaky if you’re afraid of heights. But this is what makes this place so special. Or part of it.
You see the forested ravine below, the river threading through it, and El Nido’s plateau emerging ahead from the mist. On cloudy days, you’re in the clouds. Genuinely floating.
Pro Tip: Request a morning arrival (9–11am) so you ride up in clear light. Afternoon rides often mean cloud cover.
The five safari-style yurts are luxe-max and sit near the main lodge on the 12-hectare property.
Each is 72 square meters (775 square feet) – 15 square feet bigger than my 1-bedroom in San Francisco.
In here, you’re enveloped in canvas exterior, wood framing, a plush king-size bed with fur coverings, a fireplace, and a huge en-suite bathroom that overlooks the other side of the valley.
The decor is minimalist chic with high-quality artisan amenities. And by artisan I mean, made on the property using ingredients sourced from the property.
Pro Tip: Traveling as a group? Book the villa. 200 square meters (2,150 sq ft) with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a full-length terrace overlooking the canyon, and a central living area with fireplace and dining room.
Kilómetro cero means zero kilometers in English, and metaphorically it means that everything you eat and drink here – comes from here.
They grow everything here. The ecolodge uses ecological cleaning products made from natural ingredients—no synthetic shampoos or soaps. It’s farm-to-table taken seriously: your breakfast fruit came from their trees, your lunch vegetables from their gardens, your dinner fish from their river. Even the products in your shower come from the land.
The Food: What actually shows up on your plate
The lodge’s 12-hectare (30-acre) farm produces 1,800 avocado trees, vegetable gardens overflowing with seasonal produce, fruit trees, and fresh fish from the river below. You would literally see the staff spending half their time in the kitchen and half around the property harvesting the goods. Chef Judy sources ingredients from what grows on-site or from neighbors she knows by name.
Breakfast includes fresh fruit and juice. Lunch is à la carte. Dinner is a multi-course tasting menu and is included with the room price. And it’s all grown on-site.
Breakfast is warm—fresh fruit from the orchard (avocado, guava, papaya, depending on season), eggs cooked to order, arepas thick and charred on a griddle. Fresh juice, squeezed that morning. Strong coffee.
Lunch changes daily. You might get trout from the river (grilled with a charred crust), seasonal vegetables, rice, beans, avocado… The portions are intentional—lighter than dinner, meant to fuel you through the afternoon hike, not weigh you down.
Dinner is the production. Three courses. If the kitchen has fresh herbs (cilantro, parsley, chives), they’re there. Textures matter—you’ll notice the difference between vegetables picked that morning and ones that sat in a fridge. Most importantly, the plating respects the ingredients; it doesn’t drown them in sauce or foam.
What won’t happen: Instagram theater, molecular gastronomy, ingredients flown in from Bogotá. This is mountain cooking: honest and warm. After the gondola and the hike and the altitude, it hits exactly right.
Price Check: Meals are included. All three, every day. At comparable luxury lodges, you're looking at $15–20 breakfast, $20–30 lunch, $35–50 dinner. Here, it's built into your room rate. The math matters when you're comparing luxury stays.
El Nido is home to one of Colombia’s last pairs of Andean condors.
Fewer than 150 remain in the country. This pair has nested on the cliff for over 20 years, and realistic odds are 60–70% chance of seeing them on clear mornings.
But even if the condors are “lazy” (as the staff lovingly says), you’ll spot 200+ other bird species—Andean eagles, mountain toucans, Andean parrots, hummingbirds that’ll make you stop mid-hike just to watch them hover.
The real wildlife flex, though? Pumas.
On my second morning, Jaime pulled up a video on his phone. A puma and her cub, walking through the exact canyon below the lodge—the same spot where I’d been sitting on the terrace the afternoon before. That’s the Reel he posted when I was there, to the right >>>
You’ll also see coatis, Andean deer, and if you’re really lucky, a spectacled bear (though they’re rarer).
The point: this isn’t a petting zoo. You’re in their home, and they let you watch.
Pro Tip: If you need an excuse to splurge, your accommodation fee directly supports the property's Andean Condor protection initiative. Since 2010, El Nido has invested in habitat preservation and research. So you're doing it for the environment.
El Nido built its activity menu around conservation, sustainability, and real connection—whether that’s planting trees, stargazing from a location with zero light pollution, or riding e-bikes through terrain that demands respect. Every experience is designed to deepen your relationship with the landscape.
You can spa it out one day and cave-dive the next. Hike eight different trails, ride horses through the forest, or plant native trees knowing the proceeds fund condor protection. There’s a bonfire under stars, a pollinator garden, an agro-ecological farm where you taste what grows there, birdwatching with expert guides, river swims, and night tours that transform the landscape into something almost unrecognizable.
Here’s the real move, so you don’t have to choose. Stay multiple days at a mountain property designed by people who actually care about what they’re stewarding, and you can do it all:

Sample 2-Night Cost Breakdown (for 2 people)
Do I really need to stay 2 nights?
Yes. Day one is arrival and orientation. Day two is when the place works. And you don’t want to miss the condors.
What if we don’t see the condors?
You’ll see a spectacular landscape, 200+ bird species, and genuine silence. Odds are 60-70% on clear mornings.
Can we just visit for a meal?
No. It’s an overnight property only. The experience depends on full immersion.
Is it actually safe?
Yes. The gondola is modern and regularly inspected. Staff are trained in first aid.
How’s the WiFi / cell signal?
WiFi in lodge and rooms is reliable. Cell signal is spotty (1-2 bars). But honestly, don’t come here if you’re working – the isolation is the point.
What’s the altitude situation?
You’re at ~1,800 meters (5,900 feet).
What’s the best time to visit?
Dry season (December-February, July-August): best weather. Green season (March-May, Sept-Nov): fewer tourists, lusher. Avoid October.
Who shouldn’t go?
Not ideal for those needing constant connectivity, afraid of heights, tight budgets, need to be connected, or expecting traditional spa hotel. Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, meditation practitioners, couples seeking disconnection.
How do we actually book?

The Verdict
El Nido Del Condor isn’t a hotel. It’s an intervention in your life. For two nights, you trade email and noise and decision-fatigue for silence, fresh food, the possibility of seeing one of the world’s rarest birds, and sleep you’ve forgotten your body could do.
This, you won’t forget. After two days of walking, eating, and watching a valley, you descend changed. No hotel will ever be enough after this.
Don’t overthink it. Just book it.
