How isolated is Cuba’s economy—really?

This spatial analysis uses nighttime satellite imagery (NTL) to measure Cuba’s economic development between 1992 and 2012. By comparing light intensity changes across regions and against neighboring economies like the Dominican Republic, this study reveals the degree to which Cuba has been insulated from global economic shocks—and the surprising exceptions that suggest otherwise.
